How to choose a pillow: four decisions

In this order: height, firmness, shape, material. The order is the whole point — a pillow of the right firmness at the wrong height is a hard surface in the wrong place, and the finest material in the world does not rescue either. Most people choose in reverse, starting with the material.

1. Height — the only measurement that matters

A pillow fills the gap between your head and the mattress so your neck stays in the line it holds when you stand. That gap is set by your shoulder width and your sleeping position, and it is not a preference.

Roughly: 4 to 6 inches (10–15 cm) on your side, an inch or two on your back, close to nothing on your front. Your own number takes thirty seconds to find, either standing against a wall or lying down with a phone.

Both methods, and what to do with the result

2. Firmness — whether the height survives the night

Height is how far the pillow lifts you. Firmness is whether it is still lifting you that far seven hours later with 11 lb of head on it. They are two different numbers and only one of them gets printed on a box.

The test needs no instrument: press a fist into the middle and count the return. Three to five seconds is proper viscoelastic foam. Instant means it is not memory foam. Still dented after ten seconds means the density has gone.

Firm, medium or soft, decided by position rather than taste

3. Shape — only if you move at night

If you sleep in one position all night, a flat pillow at the right height does the job and a shaped one adds nothing. If you move — and most people do without knowing — then the height you need changes by a factor of two or three during the night, and one flat object cannot be both.

That is what a contour profile is for: two heights on one pillow, switched by turning it over. Not a comfort feature; a way of avoiding a compromise.

4. Material — last, and it decides less than you think

Memory foam compresses in place and returns, so hour seven looks like hour one. Fiber and down work by displacement: the filling moves out from under the weight, which is why they feel generous to press and unreliable to sleep on.

Beyond that, gel layers and cooling covers address heat rather than support, and airflow does more than gel does.

If you are choosing because your neck hurts

The order above still holds, and there is one thing to do before it: work out whether the pain has the shape of a position problem. Worst on waking and gone within an hour points at the bed. Building through the day points at a desk. Waking you at night points at neither.

The seven usual causes · what to look for · what practitioners actually check

Two things people skip and regret

The cover has to unzip. Memory foam can never be machine washed — water destroys the cell structure. A sewn-on cover puts the whole pillow on a countdown measured in months. Which layer does what.

Give it three weeks. A neck used to one angle takes that long to settle into another, and the first week can be worse. Read the direction of travel: better week on week is adjustment, flat or worse means the height was wrong.
