The smell of a new memory foam pillow

New viscoelastic foam releases volatile organic compounds — off-gassing. The smell is chemical, unmistakable, and it takes people by surprise. It goes within a few days to a week of airing, and it is how new foam behaves rather than a sign that something is wrong with the pillow.

Two things are worth knowing: what shortens it, and how to tell it apart from damp, which smells different and does not go away on its own.

Where the smell comes from

Memory foam is made by reacting chemicals into a solid. Small quantities of by-products stay in the material after it cures, and they leave slowly as vapor once the foam meets open air.

Two things concentrate it. The foam is compressed and vacuum-sealed for shipping, sometimes for weeks, so everything that would have left gradually is held in. And the pillow arrives in a sealed bag, so the first breath you take out of the packaging is the accumulated version rather than the everyday one.

That is why the smell is at its strongest in the first minute and drops noticeably within hours. It is also why people who unbox in a closed room remember it as much worse than people who unbox by an open window.

How long it takes

WhenWhat to expect
First minutesStrongest. Sharp, chemical, obvious across a room.
24–48 hours of airingMost of it gone. Noticeable only with your face against the foam.
Within a weekGone for the great majority of people.
Beyond two weeksNo longer off-gassing. See the section below.

Warmth speeds it up and cold slows it down, so a pillow unpacked in a cold room in winter takes longer than the same pillow in July.

The two things that shorten it

  1. Open it the day it arrives. Every day it stays vacuum-sealed is a day the process has not started. Take it out of the plastic even if you are not going to use it yet.
  2. Give it 24 to 48 hours in a ventilated room before the first night. Cover off, window open, out of direct sunlight — UV yellows foam and makes it brittle, so shade rather than a sunny sill.

If you want to speed it further, baking soda works and water does not. Sprinkle it over the foam, leave it a few hours, vacuum it off with an upholstery attachment. It draws odor out without introducing a single drop of moisture — which matters, because moisture is the one thing that turns a temporary smell into a permanent one.

Off-gassing versus damp

These get confused constantly, and the treatment is opposite. Telling them apart takes one sniff and one question.

Off-gassing smells chemical or plastic-like. It is at its worst on day one and gets weaker every day. It responds to air.

Damp smells musty, earthy, like a cupboard. It is not there on day one — it appears later — and it gets worse rather than better. It does not respond to air, because the water is in the core.

If a smell arrives after a few weeks or months, or if it comes back after the cover is washed, that is damp. Usual causes: a cover put back on before it was fully dry, a pillow that got soaked and never dried through, or a bed that is made immediately every morning so the night's moisture never leaves. The same mechanism that discolors the core.

Is the smell harmful?

Stated plainly: we are not in a position to make a claim about your health, and we are not going to make one. What we can say is what the smell is — by-products of the foam leaving the material — and that it dissipates with air over days.

What is reasonable if the smell bothers you: air it longer before use, keep the room ventilated, and sleep on it once you cannot smell it with the cover on. If anyone in the household has a respiratory condition, that is a question for their doctor rather than for a pillow page.

You will find sites that publish reassuring numbers on this. We publish figures that we can trace to a source, and this is not one where we have one.

What not to do about it

  • Do not wash the foam. Water destroys the cell structure and the spin cycle tears it. It also guarantees the second, worse kind of smell. What to do instead.
  • Do not spray it with anything. Fabric sprays add moisture and a second smell on top of the first.
  • Do not put it in the sun. It speeds up the airing a little and yellows and embrittles the foam a lot.
  • Do not seal it back in the bag. Every hour in plastic is an hour the process is paused.

One thing to expect on the first night, separately

Unrelated to smell but often reported in the same breath: the pillow will feel too firm when you lie down. Memory foam is stiff at room temperature and reaches its working softness at skin temperature after two to five minutes. In a cold bedroom it takes longer. That is the mechanism that lets the foam take a shape and hold it — more on how the material behaves.
